Appearance: The vykati are bipedal wolffolk that stand about six inches taller on average than humans, with no height difference between male and female of the race. Those that hail from the tropical forest of Vhykar sport sleek, oily, black or brown fur, large ears, and large, dark eyes, while the few vykati native to the Vharkil mountains tend to be a bit larger than their forest dwelling cousins. Their fur is fuzzier and its color varies wildly, from gold to red to steely blue. The cooler temperatures and abundance of sunlight also resulted in the mountain vykati having smaller eyes and ears. Vykati can live to be 150 years old, but most average about 130. Whatever made it possible for the race to survive in the jungles, greatly increased their lifespan.

Vykati lifestyle varies widely between regions in Vharkylia. In general, they follow a strict family hierarchy and most disputes are settled privately. In the case where the problem cannot be solved by family feuding, the problem is brought before the local leader, such as a tribe chieftain, mine overseer, or representative councilmember. If they can’t solve the dispute then it is brought before Queen Xuvhanni. However, this is almost never necessary as most vykati prefer to solve problems on their own terms, not on the Queen’s terms.

Vhykar Forest: The Vhykar tribes have settled into small villages throughout the forest. They shun all nonvykati contact and are often openly hostile to other races. Unless a group of outsiders has a vykati with them there is a good chance a meeting with a forest tribe would end in disaster.

A vykati born in a tribe usually stays with the tribe their entire life, or until the tribe becomes too large for the village to maintain and some of the vykati break off to form another tribe. In some cases, a vykati will abandon his tribe and set out on his own. These vykati are known for their solitary nature and complete lack of tactfulness. Some get jobs as guards or tribal ambassadors in Ilhaya, but most either go to Drtithen to find work there or head out on their own.

Vharkil Mountains: The vykati of the mountain tribes began to dwindle after the elves invaded Terah. Many of them found a new life working in Ilhaya and escorting traders and tourists through the Vhykar forest. Those who remain in the mountains have lived there their entire lives, as their ancestors before them have for almost two thousand years. They mine for ore and trade the metal in return for goods that are scarce in the mountains. Since they didn’t feel the effects of betrayal as harshly as their cousins did they tend to be a little more trusting of outsiders. Other races are allowed into their towns but tend to be treated with aloofness unless they earn the vykati’s respect.

Riteyai: The vykati in Riteyai still possess the same hatred and distrust for outsiders from which most of their race suffers, but they express it in a different way. Rather than being outright hostile to outsiders, they work quietly to regain the chokehold they once had on the world market. Instead of using their natural tenacity and cunning to bolster their own defenses, they exploit it to tear the other races apart with subtle cunning. Most of the world doesn’t realize this and believes the Riteyai vykati to be more warmhearted than their counter parts. Because of this they welcome them into their inner circles, a choice that could have devastating results in the near future.

Drtithen: The vykati of Drtithen vary almost as widely as the vykati in the rest of Vharkylia do. Those who live around the docks and inner city have either overcome their racist views or have progressed to the point where they can tolerate outsiders for a while. Those who live on the outskirts of the city tell a different story. They have no family ties with any of the tribes, despise Riteyai underhanded methods, but still loathe other races. Since they have nowhere else to go they cling to the edges of Drtithen, doing the dirty jobs no one else wants to do and fighting to survive. The vykati that come from these slums tend to be rugged, unempathetic, and oftentimes openly hostile.

Character Options

Racial Bonuses: +2 Strength, +2 Wisdom, –2 Charisma: Vykati are fierce and their mannerisms put many people off, but living in the wilds of Terah has taught them to be cautious and sensible. (5e: +2 Strength, +2 Wisdom, -1 Charisma)

Medium: Vykati are Medium creatures and have no bonuses or penalties due to size.

Normal Speed: Vykati have a base movement of 30 feet. They also take no penalty for crawling.

Low-Light Vision: Vykati can see twice as far as humans in conditions of dim light. See Chapter 7 of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook.

Blessing of the Forest: Vykati are resistant to the many strains of disease that are native to the Vhykar forest, and as a result receive a +2 racial bonus to fortitude saves vs. disease. (5e: +2 to any save against disease.)

Scent: Vykati have the scent ability, from the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Bestiary.

Wild-lore: Vykati receive a +2 racial bonus on survival skill checks.

Languages: Vykati begin play speaking Common and Vykati. Vykati with high intelligence scores can choose from the following: Dwarven, Rahahadam, and Zenachen.

War Howl: When more than one vykati is together, they can initiate a war howl as a bonus action. All non-vykati within hearing range must make a Will save. The DC is 8 plus one for every three levels of each vykati in the group (minimum one each). Failure means the creature is shaken for 1d4 rounds. Success negates. The duration does not stack.
